I have pretty much had horses most of my adult life. First one had 4 legs so I bought it. Take lots of lessons-do trail rides first. The lessons were about 30 an hour some time ago. The problem people, make is they buy a horse that is inappropriate for them. If you want to ride once a week, you need an old plug. I love old plugs. Still they can get stubborn with out some work. My horses are outside in all but the worst weather. This is what my vet likes. They have never been sick but, have had a few cuts and such. My horses are better trained than I but i am an OK backyard rider. One horse is not nearly as much fun as having 2. But they are so attached they yell back and forth to each other when I take one out. They have a lot of grazing-I would guess 3 acres or so. They love green grass and refuse to eat hay all summer. Unless you can afford it, only have horses at home. A woman I know that boards horses, say people rarely come to see the horses they own. I was riding daily for a few years. Since I baby sit my grandsons time is harder to find. I love having them and don't mind the barn shoveling one bit.The little guy is asking to ride. The 5 year old says he will wait until he is 5 or 6 or 7 or 8. The 8 year old rides a bit. I like riding with another person or by myself. The white one is about 24 and the brown nearly 30. The white is the GGG radon of secretariat. Got him from a rescue though he was not in need of rescue-just a new home. The brown mare I got for free. But....no such thing as a free horse after the first 5 minutes. It can be done well, cheaply.Cat, I didn't know you had horses. Do you ever ride them? I've been thinking of taking riding lessons but I don't know how expensive they would be.

Still start with lessons. There is riding and there is sitting on a horse. On a trail ride you will just sit on a horse that follows all the others-pretty safe. Lessons will get you to being an active rider-much more fun. When I was a kid they would just point the way and off you would go with or without a lead. They are way more careful. I took my nieces and it was definitely a walk. I held back and did a little run-they told me insurance doesn't allow running in a trail ride-just in an enclosure. Massachusetts has a law protecting horse owners in that riding is an inherently dangerous sport. I guess it's been tested in court sense the change in how the trail rides are done.Cat, I don't need a horse. There are some stables in the Oakland hills about 25 minutes away. I'm sure if I did volunteer work such as muck stalls they would be willing to let me ride. Just not sure if I want to go that route. I don't like to be tied down or committed to a schedule. I have plenty of free time but I like to be a free spirit sometimes.
