I realize this may sound like a dumb suggestion, but I married into a long line of wood workers.
Is it possible to put a facade over the table bottom? Big clunky legs could cover the brown ones and table sides could rest against the brown sides but be connected to the clunky leg covers. Then you could paint the facade and still have the original table (under the facade) untouched.
Remember, I come with a perfect Spouse who would do anything for me. If it was possible he'd do it.
