Steve, I was leadman (Mechanic) at Max Factor, I went by one of my mechanics house, he was from Costa Rica, good guy but~well he had installed a toilet next to the TV, he had young kids.
Well, that struck me as funny. I think about Alvaro, still, he had me laughing so much of the time, with the angle he approached a job.
Sometimes when I see a house, or building, like you, I wonder what they were thinking or what was the reason for something that was deliberate done, but why did they do it. Sometimes I have that same question with our mountain home, I built it, but why did I do this or that did I not have the correct fitting or part?
