I am so sorry!!! :hugs
This is the result of our rotten economy. Still, we are slowly pulling out and he NEEDS to get employed quickly, to show, at his next serious interview in his field that he has a great work ethic. DD was fired 3 years ago--she is 35yo--from a company that she worked for from HS. She was really bummed out. DH got her involved in his books, and she became his editor, and she figured out how format and get his books up on e-books. He will publish #10 soon, because of her.
She also worked part time doing notary signing agent work, like me. We both have handled scads of private information that we are expected to not save or share. This got her the full time job that she started two weeks ago, at a local clinic, which is the 2nd largest employer in our county next to the land grant university. Great company, full benefits.
Your son could cobble together 2 or 3 part time jobs. This Depression has destroyed many people's career paths, so there is no apology needed for not finding a job quickly in your own field.

While I have quit hunting, if they go near MY garden, they had better be afraid, VERY AFRAID. I still know where the gun and shells are.

Just wanted to update you on my son's Christmas firing:
He started a new job two weeks ago. Not quite as much money, but at least it's a job. Thanks for all your well wishes and kindness.

He was dismayed at the inefficiency and callousness of the state family services and unemployment offices, in trying to apply for unemployment and food stamps.
I used to work closely with Family Services, and knew how difficult it was to even speak with a human. Then when my mom had to go on Medicaid when she was so very sick, I dealt with them as a consumer. It is, indeed, dehumanizing and frustrating. I got led in circles many times on the phone, only to be told in the end that there was no one to take my call, try again later. But on the few times I did get to talk to a person, they were invariably helpful and respectful. At least there's that.

I'm glad he got another job. Seems like a fairly quick rebound, not being the one having to look for work, but I'm sure it was very stressful to the family.
Is it a job that he can move up with?

I think somewhat. It is a subcontractor for the state. They usually have decent benefits and such.

So happy for him and his family. The stress of losing a job is great. Finding a lesser paying job isn't what is wanted, but the family stress will be greatly reduced.

I've never needed to work with social services of any type for myself, but I have done so on behalf of several tenants over time. I suppose I found it easier since I wasn't overly stressed or involved financially.
