So I'm sitting in my rocking chair working on crocheting a scarf for one of my daughters, and my husband pipes up with "Ya know, we could plant a much bigger garden this year. It would be nice to grow enough to have some tomatoes and other things to can." Huh? Who is this man, and where is my husband? It caught me off guard and I didn't answer right away, so this alien spoke again, "We need to get the tractor fixed so we can terrace that area out in the old horse pen you were talking about last year." Ok, now I know this really isn't my husband. As if this isn't disconcerting enough, he says that he wants to help me with the garden this year! What in the world is going on here???!!!!:hide

You had better make hay while the sun shines! The mother ship may recall that alien at any time.

Sounds like he has given it a lot of thought. It takes it awhile to sink in for us guys sometimes but that proves we are listening sometimes. LoL Looks like your gonna have some great quality time with each other coming soon in the garden. :) That's Awesome!

Let's assume for the moment that this isn't some alien and just a guy like most of the rest of us, as Sprinkler Buddy describes. There are a lot of ways that gardening may have finally captured his interest.

"The way to a man's heart . . ." Look, I kind of worry how we would eat if there weren't so many fresh ingredients thru the growing season! He may be getting himself into more than he realizes with that comment about canning, tho'. Something that I notice with new gardeners -- it isn't really so difficult to plant whatever from here-to-the-horizon, in the spring. Taking care of all that is something different and if you do - the harvest can be absolutely overwhelming!! Get him focused on the FRESH produce and then, staggered and succession plantings. It will keep him occupied and, maybe, the harvest will just kind of evolve thru the year.

The first thing that excites my interest is the "terrace!" I've always thought that it would be fun to have a garden like that and yet, every garden I've ever had was on boring old flat ground . . . Imagine, trying to turn a slope . . . into boring old flat ground ;)!

These laser levels look like they might be real nifty to use but, heck, I bet I could level ground with something simpler - a rifle scope strapped to my carpenter's level, for example! Or, very cheaply, a two-bit line level. It would be fun to also see how wide I could make a terrace without working too far into sub-soil!

Just a spin on the dance floor, give him a little time . . . and the lead . . . he can do it.

Steve :)

Good point. Does he help in the canning? Do you already do canning? Is this something he is not familiar with?..being as he has done it himself that is. (?)

The good news...at least he is thinking about the gardening thing.

Skeeter, I am so happy for you. I wish my husband would turn into an alien! ;) I always get the comments "it's cheaper to buy the food at the store"! and "what do you mean I have to redo the tomatoe trellis"?

It certainly sounds like there are opportunities here, but I've noticed a lot of times when my wife says "we", she means "you".
HAHA, I had an old manager who called this the "Royal We" - every time he said it, he would look at me and say "When I say We, you know I mean You, right?" At least it was clear whose job it was!!
