Let's assume for the moment that this isn't some alien and just a guy like most of the rest of us, as Sprinkler Buddy describes. There are a lot of ways that gardening may have
finally captured his interest.
"The way to a man's heart . . ." Look, I kind of worry how we would eat if there weren't so many fresh ingredients thru the growing season! He may be getting himself into more than he realizes with that comment about canning, tho'. Something that I notice with new gardeners -- it isn't really so difficult to plant whatever from
here-to-the-horizon, in the spring. Taking care of all that is something different and if you do - the harvest can be absolutely overwhelming!! Get him focused on the
FRESH produce and then, staggered and succession plantings. It will keep him occupied and, maybe, the harvest will just kind of
evolve thru the year.
The first thing that excites my interest is the "terrace!" I've always thought that it would be fun to have a garden like that and yet, every garden I've ever had was on boring old flat ground . . . Imagine, trying to turn a slope . . . into boring old flat ground

!
These laser levels look like they might be real
nifty to use but, heck, I bet I could level ground with something simpler - a rifle scope strapped to my carpenter's level, for example! Or, very cheaply, a two-bit line level. It would be fun to also see how wide I could make a terrace without working too far into sub-soil!
Just a spin on the dance floor, give him a little time . . . and the lead . . . he can do it.
