@Bob doesn't painting the wood cut down on pathogens? I also have only 1 rabbit, but there are time to time wild ones here. A bare wire cage seems very cell like to me.

@Smart Red you're very sensible. Can you post a photo of Rusty's home?
Thank you, Nyboy.
I can try, but like many, I've had some problems posting photos. Even photos that I've been able to post before.

Okay, I tried posting the photo of Rusty and his pen beside the coop. It didn't show up. @Nifty, I also tried using that photo as my Avatar so it could be seen. Nope! I can no longer change my Avatar.

Looks like a cute little predator's lunchbox to me. :D Even a medium sized dog could knock that thing over and tear the wire to shreds, reach in and have a bunny snack.

NY, you can have the best of both worlds....a clean cage AND a clean nest box, just by noting where your bunny likes to pee and poo the most and placing the nest box in the opposite corner of the hutch/cage.

We usually didn't have nest boxes unless the rabbit was ready to kindle and we just used hay. Worked out just fine and it's not much work at all in your case, with your single rabbit. A bale of hay goes a long way for a single rabbit...both food AND bedding in one purchase. I used to place a "hay net" of chicken wire up in the corner of the cage and stuff that full of hay for the eating...less waste and no dirty hay that way.

BYC people claim hardware cloth is suppose to be predator proof up to bears.

Hot wire is the only thing to deter bears and even then it better be very hot. Those folks on BYC obviously do not have any bears in the area. A dog can even get through hardware wire if it's not applied really, really well. One look at that hutch can tell you that the wire is loose on there and it's not even hardware wire.

I'd give that thing a big ol' pass.
