This year, I grew a bunch of dahlia seeds from Floret, as well as some other tubers and seeds. Here are my favorites.

During all the years that I have had dahlias, i grew dahlias from seed only once.

Good success and I was pleased with the different blooms in the mix. Of course, they were late but I hoped to store the roots and have them bloom earlier in the following year. I don't remember how many tubers went to the basement storage room but none of them survived the Winter.

I think it's likely that some success might have been gained by moving them to containers into the greenhouse in April. But, that would have shortened the storage only by several weeks and I was interested in them as a border plant and not in pots. Moving growing, potted dahlias to an open flower bed seems risky.

It can be risky leaving dahlia tubers in ground in my zone 6b during winters deluge of rain and snow. I dig the tubers up yearly. Let tubers dry using a fan , pack in vermiculite , straw , place in open sided plastic containers for air to circulate , then store them in a cool dark area in the storage walk-in area under the house. Checking on them occasionally for signs of mold .
