That really is the tough part. I did manage to grow a couple mini melons last year, that looked absolutely perfect- but they weren't ripe. So disappointing. Hopefully, you'll have better luck!

Last year we had a TON of volunteer cherry tomato plants. We had to pull or till most of them because we had plans for that garden- but transplanted half a dozen or so into pots on the deck, thankfully-- they were the only tomato plants that didn't get blight last year!!! There are a few coming up in the same garden again, but I've been pulling them.

Behind the barn, hubby tossed turkey pen bedding out the window last fall, after it had started snowing, and we coudlnt' get the wheelbarrow thru the snow-- well, the pile is still there, and there are a couple tomato plants and a squash or pumpkin plant. I haven't checked on them in a week or so but will try to get out there after my work weekend is over and take pics. The're growing like crazy!

I had one volunteer moon and stars watermelon plant come up in my peas. It produced one melon. It's in the fridge, now, chillin for later.
That looks delicious!

Can you save the seeds on that at this point? It would give you a double bonus :D

I cut it last night and it was really sweet. The seeds appear to be fully mature. Will be saving the seeds for next year. If anyone would like to try them, just let me know. Looks like there is going to be PLENTY of them.

I had a lot of volunteer basil and dill. Several pretty rusty red-colored mini sunflowers that must have come from the chickens' BOSS. They came up and bloomed so much earlier than my planted sunflowers and I really enjoyed them. Have one canteloupe vine that came up by the compost tumbler and a tomato plant as well that is just now setting fruit (not that I need anymore tomatoes!!). I'm curious to see what it will be so I'm letting it do it's thing. I had some viney something or other in the big compost pile, probably a butternut squash cross mutant thing. DH accidentally hit it with the weedeater though. Also have 3 potato plants that came up in the big compost pile that are doing better than the basket taters I planted. Can't wait to dig them up and see what I got! :D

The only thing pretty enough to take a pic of would be my cardinal (cypress) vines that volunteered from where they volunteered last year. I'll try to get a pic of them. They are so striking with their dark green foliage and pure red star-shaped blooms. I like that they volunteer so then if I don't get around to planting as many flowers as I wanted to (which happens a lot, because I give the garden the majority of my time), then I will still have something pretty to look at! :)

Kind of on par with your violas, Wife, here is a picture from much, much earlier in the growing season. But, I haven't forgotten about them!

The forget-me-nots show up every year and I really appreciate their sky-blue color.

All the plants suffered the ravages of summer mildew and have been pulled but not before, I'm sure, they scattered lots of seed ;)!

who has dill going to seed again in the veggie garden and has anise hyssop scattered about in there, too. The volunteer cilantro, best of the season, has all been pulled and used by now (except what has been allowed to set seed for 2011 ;)).

momma had about 20 volenteer Tommy Toe plants this year, I took pictures but they are on my camera in the car at the moment. But her plants are taller than me and I am 5'2" and I could not reach the tops til the wind knocked them over now they are still as tall as me and bushed out. I will get my pictures on tomorrow. I don't eat them but they look so good in my pepper sauce or in a bowl.

ETA: Tommy Toes (dime to Nickel size tomatoes) are smaller than Cherry Tomatoes and sweeter some says.

then the wind blow the vines over and they are growing again I will take more pictures later, and we are getting bowl full at a time, would have more but the eat them as quick as the pick'em. I use the ones that are turning ripe or green ones in my pepper sauce.
