Most of what is in the grocery store is not real food. Even kale is better than some of that stuff. :thumbsup

Steve, you mentioning tilapia reminded me about reading on Snopes that most tilapia is farm raised in China, and the farms aren't regulated. The industry says that the practice of feeding tilapia hog manure is no longer common. Huh?
Can I believe that if the package of salmon says "wild caught" it is actually caught in the wild? If it is from China?

There was a news item on CBS Morning show saying that more than half the food we eat is not even real food. (By "we", I am speaking of average Joe, not gardeners) So now the news makers are telling us we need to start eating food that is simple and has few ingredients! Have you ever heard of such a thing? Do you mean to tell me this highly processed, chemical laden, bleached, hydrogenated, artificially colored and flavored gob of chewy food-like substance is not food?? Waah!:hit

You mean it's not better living through chemistry! Some ex-hippies are going to be shocked!!! :duc

I had a friend who set up fish farms in Africa. They use ammonium nitrate to "fertilize" the water so that the algae can be eaten by the tilapia ...

You'd have me out on our dairy polluted rivers with a fishing rod, So Lucky?

I know that some of our tilapia is US farmed. Southern Idaho used to have quite a trout farm industry. Maybe they have expanded. Tilapia is farmed in Colorado - where my friend lived.

As far as wild-caught salmon goes - there is only so much $ in the food budget. Certainly, there are several fish farms on salt water within a few hundred miles of here. When I first moved here, the landlocked Sockeye (Kokanee) were commercially sold out of our lakes. I was never much good at catching them. That commercial activity came to an end.

As for # 8 ... why is it that those that advocate " natural" foods also claim " health" benefits of " natural " and " organic " food items ? I attended the diabetes clinic sponsored by Washington State School of Medicine that touted the USDA pyramid food groups. I followed their program to the "T" with daily diary and 2 times a week weigh ins at each class . I put on 10 pounds in 2 weeks and my blood sugar readings increased by up to 100 points when they promised that I was going to loose weight and my glucose readings would decline. Hmmm ! When I eat meals that are mostly meat/ protein and minimize fruits, vegetables and other carbs. I loose weight and my blood sugar readings drop. Do you suppose that one's genetics play a key role instead of what is touted ? I feed my kale to the rabbits, then eat the rabbit ! :)

Bob, at least you have enough sense to know what foods agree with your body. If you feel good eating mostly protein, your "numbers" are satisfactory, and you have energy, I think you should stick to what works.
