The Thanksgiving adds - turkey

This morning my wife and I went grocery shopping for the Thanksgiving feast as we are having to feed 27 people. Here in SW Washington the grocery store turkey adds range from $1.19 / lb.with $50 purchase , $1.69 / lb. , and $ 1.99/ lb. which is about double from last year. These prices hold true at Albersons too depending on the brand. Then rounding a corner in another part of the store there is another freezer and lo and behold there is a sign reading buy one turkey -- get one free with a $35 purchase! ... we chose two Honeysuckle brand turkeys both @ 21 lbs. each that cost us $24.94 for 41.92lbs of turkey which equates to $0.59 / lb. . So keep your sharp eyes out for this type of in- store offers.

Too late, @bobm, I bought everything needed for this year's dinner. $95 and change for one meal and I still have to start everything from scratch. Of course, fresh turkey runs higher per pound and that was my choice, but my Thanksgiving dinner will be a simple affair with simple food on a simple menu. After passing my childhood years at the table with 5 veggies, 3 spuds, 4 salads, etc. I much prefer offering well and enough to eat so that you can have a bit of everything and step away from the table without feeling ill. In my family that works.

We have a participant who has to work aaalll night one of those holiday nights .......

So, we are waiting until the weekend to give Thanks for our time together, however bleary-eyed.

Doesn't that mean I should be able to take advantage of after-T-day specials?? Better be careful here. We often have a fresh turkey and I could be running water over a frozen bird in the sink all-night Friday so as to be ready for the oven Saturday morning.

Been there, done that. I should'a bought the turkey by Thursday to properly insure it would thaw in the fridge. I suspect most of the fresh birds will be swiped up by procrastinating cooks like myself by Friday. Don't take the chance.

We used to raise our own Holiday birds on our ranch. A few days before the holiday, we make the guest list,overjoyed the turkey looses it's head, gets a hot tub party, rests for a couple days in a air conditioned condo, followed by a couple hours in a sauna before joining us as the guest of honor on the table. However, since we moved to the great North West, this year we have to make do with 2 volunteer frozen birds as guests of honor followed by home made pumpkin, cherry, apple, and lemon pies, and washed down with fermented grape juice from several local wintners.

I don't know what big deal is, I was done in less then 10 mins. Everything premade, just heat up. Willn't know cost till Amex bill comes. PS made sure cleaning Lady coming Fri morning.

Will do bobm. I very frugal and am always looking to see what's on sale. I have 2 turkeys in the freezer that I bought on sale last year for I think .59/lb. But I'm looking to buy a couple more. My goal is to have a Thanksgiving dinner every quarter. We just love all of the dishes and wonder why we only have it once a year.

Nyboy, what did you order? Aren't your guests bringing side dishes? I still think you should make something homemade. Since you only have to do 1 thing, it shouldn't be too hard.

I have been doing that since my DS complained/mentioned that, although we all like turkey, he only gets it once a year. I've started a tradition of turkey at least once every other month. Not the whole Thanksgiving deal, but turkey meals alway get some trimmings.
