Gypsy and I dug all the Yukon Golds. That means half of my potato space is now open for succession planting. I was really pleased with the size and number of spuds. Much better than last year's bitty baby spuds.
Then I pulled all the yellow onions - their stems looked drier than the white or red onion sets. Again, much bigger bulb size than in the past few years. Since I had accidentally planted some extra yellow onion sets in the same space as my shallots - before they grew enough to show - I pulled the shallots as well. Great day! I had planted 8 shallots from the grocery and some of the shallot clusters had more than 8 good sized bulbs each. Last year I 'lost' the bulbs I had planted and didn't get anything to show for them.
Finally was able to harvest a few cukes. I'd gotten them in a bit late so, while they have been flowering like crazy, I couldn't find anything big enough to use until today. I transplanted some small leek plants into part of the ex-potato space to give them more room to grow. Aside from steady picking of beans, beans, and more beans, the only urgent task is to pull the Amish peas and the sugar peas to store for next year's planting.
All the vining plants - squash, melons, etc - are looking great and trying their best to take over the walkways. Got the paths mowed yesterday. Probably will be the last time I can do it and avoid destroying vines and fruit.
So far there have been very few Japanese beetles. In past years they have wreaked havoc on my bean plants. Haven't seen more than one hornworm so far and that was on a potato. I thought last year was the year with no bugs, but so far I haven't had any problems with any pests on any plants. KNOCKING ON WOOD.
