I pulled up all the squash plants and tossed them in the coop. Once the girls got over their fear of the leaf monsters and discovered that they were COVERED with bugs they were in chicken heaven.
Probably be pulling up the cucumbers tomorrow - same problem - bugs got um. Thinking that I might catch 2 or 3 of the fluffy butts and leave them in the garden for a few hours to feast... Think they will agree to eat bugs and not tomatoes??
Monty, don't let anyone fuss about you pulling up stuff. You grew it for a purpose and oh boy did you get your money's worth out of it. Pull it up!! And plant something new.
Not really fussing. Just grows in a different style than I do. I'm sure it does seem strange to some people when they see or hear of someone pulling productive plants.
After canning green beans for what seems like weeks, you get tired of canning them. If someone else can get use from them I'm all for them coming up and picking what the want. I picked a grocery bag full yesterday, divided them up and packed them in quart bags. I'll probably give my mom a bag, and my dad.
Yesterday I picked corn and started 48 Homemade Pickles seeds. The seeds are from 2008, but I'll give them a try. The Picklebush variety is horrible and I will never grow those again. Homemade Pickles are 55 days, so they should be ready to start harvesting the first week of October. I'm going to plant every one that comes up because I may only get a few from each plant before the first frosts get here.
I shoveled a quarter of a pick up bed of horse manure and spread it on 4 of my garden beds. Yeah, I know, shoulda composted first, but I mulched it with lots of grass clippings and watered it in good. It'll just have to compost in place I yanked out the dead tomato plants and weeds. I tossed a stick to the dogs and they played tug of war with it while my 90 year old mom sat in the shade, watched and laughed. I sweated A LOT. It's a hundred ++ degrees and humid. I picked some butterbeans, green beans and eggplant for tonight's supper.
Bay, sounds like a really nice day. :coolsun I love days like that.
Marshall, I know your new computer doesn't do pictures well, but if you can get it going, I'd sure love to see some of these unique beans you've been growing.
My neighbor and I finished pulling and picking the last of the green beans today. Monty came home from work and picked about 25 pounds of tomatoes, and he's processing them now. I also got two loaves of bread made and in the freezer. TOmorrow I will make two more loaves of bread and some egg noodles.
We haven't had a very nice summer, too much rain, the humidity is on the rise again with storms coming in again.
Ran the weedeater around the perimeter of the little veggie garden. Vroom! Vroom! ZZzzziippppt!
Buried a pizza box and 3 buckets of compostables, along with the cut-back canes of the blue globe thistle. They were well-dried but the last time I was out there, I didn't bring my gloves. There was no way I was touching that stuff without gloves! The pizza box was on a "why not?" basis! I'm often stuffing kitchen peelings in a cereal box or something and dumping box & all in the compost bucket. Tired of trying to get pizza boxes folded up for the garbage can . . .
Dug 3 more potato plants. 2#/plant yield, which isn't bad compared to the way they've been going. Finally hit the reds & thought I'd come out of the dearth of spuds. No. The first Sangre plant had exactly 1 potato! Anyway, the Yukon Gold has performed poorly 2 seasons and I may very well not have it in the 2014 garden!
Here is a picture of what went in a week ago behind me as I harvested potatoes & refilled the bed with compostables:
Those are tiny bok choy seedlings. I will need to move every single one to better locations when they are big enuf, & we get a good transplanting day. What will be growing on the trellis will be snow peas. They are just about 20% up but too tiny to be seen. I'll need to get some string on the trellis.
