OH PICTURES PLEASE :)

eggplants are seriously one of my favorite vegetables ..the way they look ..all the types ....colors the shape is just downright sexy..and they have no freaking nutrition!!!

how could something so beautiful and tasty not have anything in it????

this is just tragic to me

I am drifting here :)
Its okay - drift away!

I, too, love to eat them, but I cannot give pictures. Im STILL trying to get some sprouts to take and set out. I have a nice seed frame for them and they show their little heads okay - but when I set them out something gets them or they keel over. It's discouragin', that's what it is! And Im on the last of them...

These are Lavender Delights or something like that, obtained from Parks. Im assuming they have light purple skins, so we'll see (I hope). I'm an inveterate cheap skate, and these were on clearance for under a buck the pack.

well considering the price of an eggplant you scored big time

but then the pay back really (we gardeners know this secret) is it is really in watching them grow from the seed to the plate :)

that first bite fo the first eggplant for me will be amazing since this is the first year I have ever tried to grow them!!!

if I get one I win!

if you get one you win at under a buck!

Well, it looks like I will have only 2-3 plants - the seedlings just sort of dried up. I think I know why they were on sale...

I hope I can keep them going....................

All this talk about eggplant has me seriously thinking about getting some seed or plants and restarting.

I have tried three times and have been unsuccessful to get them sprouted. Maybe they are a bit finicky

I just found some early maturing, Long Purple seed on ebay for $3, all in. So Ill keep at it.

As for height and productivity, from what I read it is variable, depending on the type.
Some of the smaller, dwarf varities give lots of small, egg sized fruit and are suitable for pots.

The "garden varieties" are about waist high and can give 6-10 fruits, the more being seen in the long varieties. The plant continues to produce, if you remove the fruit early and often (once they have gotten to proper size).

In the more common varieties, it is accepted that you thin back to 4 - 5 fruit per plant and keep the growing tips nipped once the fruit is set. They also need support, something, using something like stakes or arch of fence wire.
Nip out any flowers that appear 2 - 3 weeks before the first frost date in your locale.

I dont know if you wanted a book , but thats what Ive learned so far.

Davroo - I need a bit of clarity. So thining back to 4-5 plants is that over the season or at one time. Like once the plant has 4-5 then stop all flowers until they have been harvested? And then let them grow again?

Or will each plant only produce for 4-5 per season?

Also other than Parm what can be done with eggplant? I roasted it on the grill added olive oil and salt and garlic but it was slimey. me no likey.
