Heck of a Christmas Gift

After working for a company for 13 years, my son got fired yesterday. No severance pay, no howdy-de-doo. He is nearing 50, and his wife is going to nursing school, so things are going to be rough for them and their two kids. He never was the type to save $$, unless it was to buy something special for his wife.

That's terrible news So Lucky. I'm so sorry to hear that. Is this the son with the new baby? The timing couldn't be worse.

I hope he's able to land on his feet and get another job quickly.

No tract, no howdy-doo, no union.

We may imagine that karma or destiny will right wrongs. Perhaps so.

It generally takes more power than small people have against incorporated companies. Too often, a lack of consideration, an impetuous and crude ego in management are what our economy rewards.

My two sudden terminations of employment (quitting) seem so petty looking back on them. They were sudden temper tantrums that likely hurt no one but myself. One, quitting after a week of no morning breaks when we felt so bold as to determine to take one, ourselves. Then being told to "get back to work." The other, denied a lunch break because the boss decided that the timing of one was a management decision. Such small things and, as I say, probably doing no damage except to myself.

Is there a chance that your son can team up with others in some kind of gainful activity, so lucky?

I don't know the details of what happened or anything like that. If the company's tax year matches the calendar year there might be some benefits to reducing pay role before the start of next year, but the timing is still cold.

A lot of times people that go through this wind up with jobs they like better or maybe even pay pretty good, but the immediate emotional and mental impact can be worse than the financial. I hope he lands on his feet but he will be in my prayers.

Pretty cold thing to have happen, more so at this time of year. So many times this type of thing happens.

Sure timing had to do with not giving xmas bonus. Was he working on the books, so he can collect unemployment ?

You really wonder how these "bosses" can sleep at night. Wishing him a painless transition to something else...quickly!

That sucks. After 13 years! And to be fired at Christmas! I hope he can find something he likes better. In the meantime, he can go file for unemployment. It probably won't be as much as he was making, but it will help. Bear in mind that unemployment is taxable at the end of the year. That is a Catch-22 because unemployment is less that what one is accustomed to making and there is no withholding.

I am so sorry. Just recently I know several people that have lost jobs. One is a friend's son who worked at a place for 25 years and is in his 50s and they fired him. He has a lot of health issues and was turned down for disability. DH's brother has worked at a place for about 28 years and the business is closing in a small town with no jobs. Then, DH worked at his job for 13 years this year and because of illness, had to lose his salary wage and go to hourly and can only work part time, but now because of pain he cannot work at all. I hope your son can find a better job soon.
