After Ava taste tests that beautiful looking melon, make sure she gets to type a post here to let us all know how good it tastes...She may after all want to plant 360 acres of Melons next year!

Wow! What kind of cantaloupe is that, Jack?
That is a story in itself. We planted a variety called Sweet N' Early because someone on this forum wrote that she grew them in Maine and they were idea for our zone. We had a lousy spring and they looked pretty sad, so much later I planted a variety called Hale's Jumbo. The Sweet N' Early are shaped like bowling balls and are taking their Sweet Time, the one in the photo is the Hale's Jumbo and sure lived up to its name. Go figure.

Well, Hales Jumbo is a tried and true variety, so I bet it's going to be yummy! I have gotten in the practice of leaving my cantaloupes on the counter till they start smelling up the kitchen. That usually insures that they will be ripe and just the right degree of firmness inside. But I have been fooled a time or two.

We did not want to take a chance so we put it in the fridge. Ava has been waiting since we planted the seeds in April, and I would hate to see her disappointed. I think she will get a charge out of just seeing it. Every time her parents pick her up she makes them admire her melon patch.

Ava looks so grown up! and very photogenic.

Did that melon smell good? Was it very sweet?

Cantaloupes are my favorite fruit. Too bad I can't grow them here. :(

Give Miss Ava a pat on the back for me. I'm very impressed.
