I have stories.
Stories of good people who fell on tough times, who appreciate what little assistance they get, and who work like heck to get back on their own feet.
Stories of slackers who use the system to their advantage, feel entitled to whatever they see other have without considering the effort involved, and are raising a new generation to mimic their same entitlement behaviors.

We all have stories much the same.
It is SO BAD as @seedcorn wrote in the thread title! There are things we all can do locally. There are things we all can do through prayer, citizenship, charity, and political action.

Here we have a site focused on gardening. I come here to avoid the dire situations in the newspapers and on radio and TV. I can skip further posts on this site or I can choose to plant a row for the poor and get back to thinking gardening. I invite my friends to do the same.

I like that, plant a row for those in need. Great joy to share with those that can't. Several older ladies at church are given extra produce. Need to make sure there is extra. Good idea @Smart Red

Yes, and much better if you deliver it personally to the ones who need it. Food banks are great, but I know for a fact that my local one is abused by slackers. I'm not interested in helping those folks.

The news had an upcoming story about school lunches. I asked Maverick if his school lunches tasted good. He said no, and they are far too small. True. A 200 lb senior football player gets no more or no less than a 90 lb freshman girl. Maverick came up with a solution of his own:
He suggested that all the students who consider themselves Democrats follow Michelle's food plan and all the Republican students can eat decent food. I see that I am raising the boy right (right as in conservative) with the little time I have to influence him.

To accomplish that, one has to remove the incentive. Being cold & hungry is a powerful motivator to getting a job & taking responsibility for one's own life.
Take a few deadbeats out, it will give the rest the incentive to take care of the children they brought into world.... :)

Tells me our school system doing it right. My son-6'4", built, was always given more than girls plus always told to come back.

Seedcorn your school system is very rare. I went to public schools lunch trays where made up ahead of time, all the same. You have to pay a small fee unless you had a token. then free.
