Another thing to consider is what the States mandade as what the seasonal blend is to be allowed. When we drive from Cal. to Wa. or vise versa there is at least 3-6 miles to the gal. difference with the better milage for the gas in Cal. When we drove from Cal. to Wa. 2 years ago, I filled up with gas again just over the Cal./Ore. in Ore. border at a Chevron Station ... 2 miles down the road going up an uphill grade, my car started to sputter ... pulled in to another service station... the attendant laughed and said it was the gas blend and adjusted the timing and everything was fine thereafter. Yea, the enviromentalists like to save the planet, so we have to burn more gas. Last time that I checked when one burns more gas one gets more smog . But what do I know

Ours is around 2.99. Honestly, once they had us used to paying almost 4 bucks a gallon- I never thought they would let it go so low.... 28 dollars to fill my car, just about half what it was.

That's about what I thought - all those record profits just a couple of years ago.

Well, I was curious and since I went to the bother of checking Dept of Energy annual gas prices, all grades West Coast, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator, all in 2010 dollars, here's what I came up with:

I think I pushed all the buttons right. I used the West Coast region numbers because you can see how much prices vary around the country just in this TEG thread. If it is $2/gallon in your community, that is $1.85 in 2010. So, cheapest in 12 years if your community hits the national average.

We've gone through some changes, yes?

I worked in those full-service gas stations when I was in school. Hrumph, I didn't especially like all those windows I had to wash, tires I needed to check, shoot ... there was a few weeks when we offered vacuuming ..!

By the time the long lines showed up, I was back in school and, yep, back in a gas station. This time, I was in charge of scheduling work hours. The station would close early again and again as we ran out of gas. Who worked late? Yours truly nearly scheduled himself out of work income!

Gee, I feel ancient. I remember gas at 19 cents a gallon. We could ride around town all Saturday night on a dollar.

sure most of us can remember way back when there was no gas stations, it was called a "service station" a employee would fill your tank wash your windshield check your oil check the air in the tires. and they had a 2 bay garage to do repair work from oil changes to mufflers. that had a soda machine the dispensed sodas in a glass bottle and inside that had some snacks.
then it changed to self service and full service..
now it's called a "convenience station" where you pump your own gas and grab you name it, so much for the service bays. and if you ask where can i get a oil change the clerk has no idea...and says "next in line"

do you remember way back when when you bought gas you got stamps and when you had enough you got a free set of dinnerware.

YEP, FIL had his own service station. DH grew up in it.
