My parents rarely drank alcohol. Last night at Christmas eve my father had 3 glasses of wine though the night. My sister gave him white wine glass which is much smaller then red wine glass and filled it only half way. He drank only a few ounces of wine. On the hour and half trip home he kept telling me how good he felt. He is in his 90s and has lots of aches and pains. He said the wine took away the nonstop ringing in his ears. I suggested that maybe he should have a glass of wine every day. He refused saying it would make him a alcoholic. I don't under stand it made him feel better, if it was a pill a Dr gave him he have no problem. :barnie:he

Maybe you can get him to try it a few more times, like for New Year's Eve. (Of course, he may have a headache today, so that may be a deterrent.)
And remind him that the docs say it is good for you.

Relay this experience to his doctor. Perhaps his next prescription would include a daily glass of wine. Unless your father had some bad experience with alcohol in his youth, I highly doubt that such a small amount of wine would make him an alcoholic anytime before his 125th birthday.:hugs

I'm also a non-alcohol drinker so I get your fathers dilemma. Doctor ordered my Dad to drink a shot of wine for his stomach aliments. I also use black berry brandy when I have a terrible flu.

Nyboy, was there an alcoholic in your dad's family? Maybe he is more afraid of the inheritable tendencies than he need be.

Plenty of folks use wine medicinally, especially the elderly. I remember my first nursing job we had two patients who were prescribed 10 cc of red wine before bed each night.

I've tried to take a little bit of wine each day but the taste was so foul that I couldn't gag it down, so couldn't continue it but it's supposed to be very good for arthritis, GI problems, insomnia, circulatory issues, etc. Wish they made a red wine one could drink that wasn't so nasty bitter horrible that I could stand to drink, as I would take a small amount each day myself.

Bee how about a wine spritzer ? half wine half club soda. No one in his family problem with alcohol . I can remember the older family members saying wine was good for blood. Both my mom and him would drink just very rare maybe holiday or family get together. When they did drink never more then 2 drinks. mom was a control freak she did not like what alcohol did to her

Maybe aware of the difficulties of alcohol use and not the benefits. Control of self ...

Someone once said that medicine is what is prescribed for us to occupy ourselves with, while our bodies heal themselves.

Your parents may have always tried to maintain standards of behavior and "set an example." Wait! I'm sure they did. Yes, it may have led to a rather stuffy existence but there is plenty of bad examples out there, plenty of encouragement for others' gain and personal loss.

Careless existence is rather tedious, also. Tedious for the human neighborhood - as those who try to shoulder some responsibility become exhausted by those who are care-less. Live long enough and we see an enormous toll that alcohol and other drug use places on individuals, families and communities.

When I have a glass of red wine, I get a acid burn feeling . So ... have a glass of vin- rose or white wine with no issues. If you have a vin- rose or white wine, you could add a can of gingerale and you have a glass that tastes like champagne . ;) :ya
