Ah potatoes.....!!! boggy b :D I have to confess I have always thought it was when they were ready for planting. :D
But here is some extra info. I only grow the little waxy salad kind as we can get a very good selection of varieties at decent prices from the supermarket -- the salad kind are much more expensive, so worth growing at home.

Hi Hattie,

Well, that surely cleared the cobwebs outta my brain on most questions concerning the differences.....with only one question left, that I can think of (may have already asked this, but can't remember).....do gardeners, in the UK, plant the seed taters whole or do they (as we do, here) cut them up and plant the individual or groups of eyes?

Those were VERY good "tater" links, by the way.

High boggy b,

Depends on the size of the potato. If small plant whole: if large cut up & let the cut sides dry out a bit, then plant -- a couple of days should be OK. :frow

I think I have got flu (or something like). I feel like hell -- all shivery, hands like ice (I'm wearing gloves so excuse funny typing) & aching in my muscles. All this after having had my jabs last autumn! Still I'm trying to keep going, albeit from my couch.....!!

I have been entering all my new seeds onto my database so I can keep track of what I have & how well they do this year. I started last year & it was a great help. But it takes a fair amount of time (esp. with gloves on! )

So here are some other UK vegetable blogs:

Good "deal". I am chitting taters (don't say that really fast....it'll cause coffee to shoot outta your nose) right now and just waiting for it to dry out, some. Everytime the soil gets about right...."BAM", more rain. Been a 'crazy' year, so far.
Liked the idea, on one of the links, of covering the area to keep it dry and to warm up the soil for an early start on tater planting.

Sorry to hear that you're "under the weather". Kinda worried that you may be, yesterday, when I didn't caught your posts. Do hope you get to feeling better.

While reading through Soilman's archives, I came across two terms used for measurement in the UK, one for time and one for weight. Not know the meanings....I "searched" for the answer and came up with a coincidental number (know that didn't make sense...just bear with me)
The words were "a fortnight" and "a stone".
"A fortnight" (time) is 14 days and "a stone" is 14 pounds (weight)
Thought that was cool...and just a little bit odd.

That was interesting, Hattie....especially the complexity of "stone" weight. Can see why it was "dropped" as a measurement in 'trade'.

Do hope you get better.....SOON.
